The Chengdu J-7 (simplified Chinese: 歼-7; traditional Chinese: 殲-7) is license-built copy of the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 built by the Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group for the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) as a result of a technology transference arrangement in 1962. While externally it is identical to the MiG-21, the Soviet Union failed to transfer the complete documentation for the MiG-21, resulting in Chinese engineers having to reverse engineer the missing components from locally sourced parts.
