The plant has many common names, some of which are: chameleon plant, Chinese lizard tail, fish leaf, fish mint, fish wort, heart leaf, and rainbow plant. The flowers have four to six petals with a tall spike in the center, although the "petals" are actually bracts (petal-like leaves) and the true flowers grow on the spike. The leaves are cordate (heart-shaped). Houttuynia is used in cooking and medicine throughout Asia.
