Historical Japanese hairstyles that traditionally denoted an aspect of the wearer's identity, such as their age, societal status or marital status. Most nihongami styles are formed with a wax known as abura. Outside of Japan, the most distinguishable nihongami is that of geisha and oiran, given their elaborate designs, such as the large datehyogo style.
