When the brightly-lit parts of the image are washed out and lose detail, up to becoming completely white. In photography, this occurs due to the light being too bright for the camera to capture. In art, this artifact may be imitated for artistic effect, much like lens flare or bokeh. See bloom for when the overexposure gently bleeds into the surrounding area.
