A Japanese death god, one who reaps souls. After World War I, the European image of Death_(entity) found its way into Japan, and most modern depictions of shinigami are at least slightly influenced by European folklore. Unlike the European Death, shinigami are commonly depicted as a species of death spirits rather than a single personification of the concept of death.
