An Essex-class aircraft carrier of the United States Navy, CV-12 was originally ordered with the assigned name Kearsarge, but was renamed Hornet while under construction after CV-8 was sunk at the Battle of Santa Cruz in 1942. [I]Hornet was commissioned in 1943 and earned thirteen battle stars from combat service in the Pacific Theater of World War II and the Vietnam War. It was also a recovery vessel for several space missions from the Apollo program, most famously Apollo 11.
