Second ship of the Portland class, served as Fifth Fleet Flagship during World War II. Delivered the nuclear bomb in 1945 to Tinian island, was sunk soon afterwards, having the unfortunate distinction of being the last major US war loss of WWII. Due to a number of miscommunications the survivors were left drifting in shark infested water for days before being rescued. Her captain was tried and found guilty of losing his ship, the guilt of which led to his suicide a decade later. He was finally exonerated when a student did a research project on the event during the 1990s.
