The combat branch of the Nazi Party's paramilitary Schutzstaffel (SS) organization. Heinrich Himmler, Josef Mengele and Michael Wittmann were some of the prominent members. The personnel were generally recognized by the all-black uniform worn by the officers, consisting of a jacket, peaked cap, necktie, pants and boots. Most units did not wear such uniform outside of Germany. Instead, the officers and the soldiers wore the similar field grey uniform of the Wehrmacht.
